About the author of these pages

My name is Jeffrey Dobek, I was born in 1965 and since October 2003 having been living in Bydgoszcz Poland. I work as an English teacher (writing/reading) at the Nauczycielskie Kolegium Jezykow Obcych (NKJO or Training College for Foreign Language Teachers) and in the rest of my time I provide tutoring for private students. I also worked for the NKJO from 1999–2001 before returning to North America for two years. For more information on what I do and where I've worked, take a look at my resume. During my first period in Poland, I lived in Fordon, a suburb located just east of Bydgoszcz. Here was the view from my balcony. Now I have my own apartment near the Bydgoszcz city center.

Prior to returning to Poland, I worked as a systems analyst with Valentine Robotics, in Auburn Hills, MI, and lived in Windsor, Ontario.

I worked as a systems analyst with Union Pacific Technologies from 1994–96, a major supplier of software to the transportation industry. I lived in St. Louis, Missouri, first in an apartment in the Soulard area, located just south of downtown, and from 1997 in a replica townhouse in the Lafayette Square neighborhood, a short distance from Soulard. My house was very nice, but Europe called, and I sold it before my departure.

I have many interests, though the primary theme of all them is usually related to my obsession with trains and railways! Trains have had a life-long attraction for me, and this is reflected in both my work and play. I have always done quite a bit of railway photography, and continue to do so, but not at the pace I once did.

My love of trains is intertwined with my love of travel. I have visited the U.K. and Poland so many times I've now lost count. I invite you to visit my Polish Train Page to see some pictures and visit some other Polish links. I have always loved Europe, and in the past have made some side trips to the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Hungary, and Austria. I have studied the Polish language on my own for the last several years; I had hoped that being in Poland for longer than a 3-week period would at last lead to some progress in learning this language, but after some years I was still struggling with it!

I also like working with computers. I have a Macintosh G4 Quicksilver, which is the eighth Macintosh I have owned! I use my machine for desktop publishing, web and graphic design, database work, and am now starting to work with video, too. I am a hard-core Macintosh supporter, and so far have talked several friends into buying them, too! When on the road, I stay in touch with a Macintosh 14" iBook. A few years ago I also ditched my conventional film cameras, and now do almost all of my photography with a Fuji Finepix 602z digital camera.

My cat, Kuba, has been with me since September 2004. He was adopted from the Bydgoszcz animal shelter. My previous cat, Radek, travelled with me to Poland both times. He seems to adapt well to all my moving around, but finally passed away in the summer of 2004.
